چکیده
Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (4). During the study period, 38 cases of cryptosporidiosis and 943 cases of shigellosis were reported in Baltimore. Temperature was strongly seasonal; precipitation was not. A dry period during 1999 was observed. No seasonal cryptosporidiosis patterns were identifiable. Two outbreaks of shigellosis occurred; in 2000 (≈50 cases) and 2002–2004 (≈870 cases). Sporadic cases of shigellosis were not seasonal. Two hurricanes resulted in heavy rainfall in Baltimore during the study period (5). Hurricane Floyd inundated the city with rain on September 16, 1999, and on September 19, 2003, Hurricane Isabel produced heavy rains and storm surge in Baltimore (which is located near the northern end of Chesapeake Bay). Approximately 4 other named tropical storms or depressions directly affected Baltimore rainfall during the study. However, collectively, none of these events had distinguishable signatures in the incidence of shigellosis or cryptosporidiosis in this urban environment.

Hantavirus Infection in Anajatuba, Maranhão, Brazil
In 2000, the first outbreak of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome was recognized in the Brazilian Amazon (Maranhao State). An epidemiologic study identified a 13.3% prevalence of hantavirus-specific immunoglobulin G. The analysis of risk factors suggests that persons are occupationally exposed to infected rodents in the crop fields.
متن کاملPotential Geographic Distribution of Hantavirus Reservoirs in Brazil
Hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome is an emerging zoonosis in Brazil. Human infections occur via inhalation of aerosolized viral particles from excreta of infected wild rodents. Necromys lasiurus and Oligoryzomys nigripes appear to be the main reservoirs of hantavirus in the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes. We estimated and compared ecological niches of the two rodent species, and analyzed ...
متن کاملCharacterization of Juquitiba Virus in Oligoryzomys fornesi from Brazilian Cerrado
The Juquitiba virus, an agent of Hantavirus Cardiopulmonary Syndrome, is one of the most widely distributed hantavirus found in South America. It has been detected in Oligoryzomys nigripes, Akodon montensis, Oxymycterus judex, Akodon paranaensis in Brazil and in O. nigripes, Oryzomys sp. and Oligoryzomys fornesi rodents in Argentine, Paraguay and Uruguay. Here, we report the genomic characteriz...
متن کاملVulnerability of Brazilian municipalities to hantavirus infections based on multi-criteria decision analysis
BACKGROUND Hantavirus infection is an emerging zoonosis transmitted by wild rodents. In Brazil, high case-fatality rates among humans infected with hantavirus are of serious concern to public health authorities. Appropriate preventive measures partly depend on reliable knowledge about the geographical distribution of this disease. METHODS Incidence of hantavirus infections in Brazil (1993-201...
متن کاملHantavirus infection in HIV positive individuals in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: a seroprevalence study.
Hantaviral pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a group of zoonosis caused by infected rodents described in the Americas. Human infection becomes more likely with the disturbance of the natural habitats of these rodents through deforesting for building and agriculture.1 Several rodent species adapt to living in the surroundings of human dwellings, proliferating excessively.2 Although documented in two b...
متن کاملSurveillance, health promotion and control of Chagas disease in the Amazon Region - Medical attention in the Brazilian Amazon Region: a proposal
We refer to Oswaldo Cruz's reports dating from 1913 about the necessities of a healthcare system for the Brazilian Amazon Region and about the journey of Carlos Chagas to 27 locations in this region and the measures that would need to be adopted. We discuss the risks of endemicity of Chagas disease in the Amazon Region. We recommend that epidemiological surveillance of Chagas disease in the Bra...
